Photos by Celeste Echlin (Hemaris Thysbe - Hummingbird Clearwing)
My encounter with the Hummingbird Clearwing the other day was a happy accident when a gust of wind overturned a deck box of petunias on my back deck. This beautiful creature with an irridescent green body and red-brown striping on his lower body was busy drinking up the nectar and not seeming to mind my scramble to get some quick photos from my digital camera as he flitted from flower to flower. At that point, I still had no idea what he was, but I got close enough to hear the buzz of his wings and enjoy his fascinating dance among the flowers.
This is only the second time I have seen the moth, the first time being last summer. But after finding out more about them on the web and hearing how others are equally surprised and fascinated by their existence, I'm a dedicated fan. I'm lucky to live in an area with loads of butterflies, dragon and damsel flies. Harwinton is just east of picturesque Litchfield, CT. Visitors to New England should also include a visit to Magic Wings in South Deerfield, Mass. (http://www.magicwings.net)
