Photos by Keith Hammerbeck (White Lined Sphinx Moth)
I was tending my new garden near dusk when I noticed what I first thought was a hummingbird feeding on a row of phlox blossoms. Moving closer, I realized that it was not a hummingbird, but a moth! I watched, fascinated, as it hovered before the blossoms as it fed. I had never seen such a creature. I went into the house to get my wife. We watched it for several minutes before I went back in to get my digital camera. By the time I returned, there were two of them. My research of this moth led me to this site; it also solved a mystery from earlier in the summer: What those large green catterpillars with the side markings were.
