Photos by Derek Hilton (Snowberry Clearwing - common name: "Bumblebee Moth"):

"I started seeing these last summer. At first I  thought they were some kind of wasp so I wasn't too eager to get close  to them, and they only hovered for seconds over the particular plant I saw them in.. Later they starting hanging around some butterfly bushes and actually stayed still enough for a picture.

I have had a running debate with a few people on the name of these critters. I contend they are bumblebee moths because of the stripes compared to the gray plain color of the hummingbird moth.. I guess either is slang anyway..  I made a cicada killer wasp mad at me yesterday thinking it was a snowberry..
